Running back to his car, he grabbed his radio and contacted the St. Matthews Police to confirm that a shooting had occurred at the mall. He then radioed mall security, asking specifically for Tim Close, who’d recently completed Emergency Medical Training. But even as he was speaking, King saw Close running toward him through the parking lot. While King kept looking out for trouble, Close checked the young woman for a pulse but found none. He then reached inside her car and switched the engine off.

At about this same time, the first police officer arrived, followed by a second patrolman thirty seconds later. Soon, dozens of officers, detectives, and a K-9 unit would arrive, as did Emergency Medical Services. And like Tim Close had done only moments before, paramedics felt for a pulse but did not find one. Leaving nothing to chance, they removed Mary’s jacket, opened her shirt and attached a heart monitor, which confirmed the young woman was dead.

On this night, Mary’s parents, along with Mary’s friend, Jana, were decorating the artificial Christmas tree the Byrons had recently purchased. It must have been an especially good night for them, for not only was Mary starting to reclaim her life, but the source of the problem, Donovan Harris, was safely tucked away in jail. Or so they believed.
